Why A Luxurious Bathroom Needn’t Be A Pipe Dream

You don’t have to be rich to turn your bathroom into a spa-like sanctuary. A few luxurious bathroom renovations could be more affordable than you think. Here are just a few ways to make your bathroom more lavish without having to splash out.

Opt for an acrylic freestanding tub

Freestanding tubs are often viewed as a symbol of luxury. But just how much do they really cost? While porcelain and cast iron tubs typically cost between $1000 and $2000, you can buy acrylic slipper-shaped freestanding tubs for as little as $500. These tubs don’t retain their heat as long, but are otherwise a very affordable alternative. Hire a reputable plumbing company like Bluefrog Plumbing to install your tub.

Consider faux-stone shower panels

Covering the walls of your bathroom in natural stone tiles will cost you a huge amount of money. A more affordable way to achieve the same look is to opt for faux-stone shower panels. These are made from a material like acrylic but are patterned and textured to look like granite or marble. They’re easy to install and easy to clean.

Install your own electric underfloor heating

Many of us love the idea of having underfloor heating in our bathroom, but assume it’s too costly to install. In fact, underfloor heating can actually be quite cheap – especially if you opt for electric underfloor heating and install it yourself. Hydronic (pipe) underfloor heating typically costs $10 to $15 per square foot, while electric underfloor heating only costs $6 to $10 per square foot, making it much more feasible on a tight budget.

Look into DIY shower kits

Want to install a walk-in shower? This might not cost as much as you think either. Prefabricated walk-in shower kits can be bought for $700 to $3000 (some even cost as little as $300) and can be installed oneself. They are a great option if you’ve always wanted a walk-in shower in your bathroom, and will cost more than hiring a professional to install a custom walk-in shower (on average, $9000 according to Angie’s List!).

Treat yourself to a backlit demisting mirror

Why opt for a regular mirror, when you can buy a backlit demisting mirror instead? You can buy battery-operated versions of these mirrors for less than $50 to hang on your bathroom wall. Such mirrors allow you to always clearly see your reflection regardless of whether it’s dark or steamy.

Invest in luxurious accessories

Don’t overlook the small accessories in your bathroom such as toothbrush holders, toilet seats and shower baskets. You can make your bathroom feel lavish by choosing accessories with chrome steel or marble-effect textures. Investing in some fancy bathroom products like exotic soaps and bath bombs can also make your bathroom feel more sophisticated and relaxing.

Don’t play around too much with the fixture layout

Something that can really push up the price of a bathroom remodel is moving around bathroom fixtures. Keeping your toilet, sink basin and bathtub in the same place could greatly reduce plumbing costs, because you’re not having to add and relocate piping. Only move fixtures if they’re in an impractical position.
