The Future Of Tech In Our Daily Lives and How to Find Balance

The Future Of Tech In Our Daily Lives

Every day we see the impact of rapidly changing technology on our daily lives. From robotics to Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality, technology has quickly overtaken how businesses and people conduct themselves.

With the rapid rate of improved technology becoming so prevalent, how is it impacting our lives positively, and what are the potential negatives?

Enhanced Consumer Experiences

The benefits of robots, AI, and augmented reality provides unlimited potential! Amazing right?

Robots: The increased use of robots to manufacture and provide logistics means that consumer products and goods can be built and shipped faster and more consistently than a traditional workforce. The rate of production can have profound impacts on supply chain fulfillment as well as fighting inflationary costs. Additionally, robots can work around the clock and don’t need much supervision or break time, just some occasional maintenance, making productivity skyrocket as a result. However, the use of robots is taking away jobs.

Artificial Intelligence: Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a system of programming that compiles infinite data points and forms conclusions based on probability rather than pre-programmed results. What AI can create is a predictive result based on past and current behaviors, calculating thousands of data points and similar results to create an outcome best suited for a specific individual. The Instagram algorithm is a perfect example of this. Sure we love to see new related content, however, we miss seeing what our friends are posting. IT’s a two edge sword.

As the algorithms and programming expand and grow, a consumer’s actions are usually predictable, and results are catered to the individual’s preferences.  The benefit for consumers is that with AI, the software learns to predict your interests and needs before they become a reality, making suggestions and driving results to like-minded products, entertainment, and goods.

Another benefit of utilizing AI software is finding ways to get the upper hand with investing or sportsbooks. The marriage of tech and finance has boosted the popularity of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to the point of becoming a potential holding in traditional 401K’s. What’s more, gamblers can leverage the system to their advantage online when using a sportsbook in Ohio, Nevada, Atlantic City, or another locale.

The problem with AI is that it can create an “echo chamber” that only shows results of a bias and that reinforces future search results, tightening the “echo chamber” into an “echo-spiral.” Another issue with AI is that it can potentially become omnipotent, from passive listening devices in our phones and homes to tracking software on every app, website, and appliance we use, limiting our privacy in the long run.

Augmented Reality: Augmented reality has incredible benefits in fields such as retail and medicine. A person using augmented reality can picture the item in their room or clothes on their body before purchasing, saving time, materials, and money.

In the field of medicine, the advantages of augmented reality allow doctors and patients to get an image of what the procedure may look like before the first incision or stitch is made, which saves on the workforce, anesthesia, sterilization, and materials.

It makes visualizing purchase decisions such as large items like a couch easier to see, giving consumers more information to make an educated purchase decision.

A problem with augmented reality is the creation of “deep fakes,” that is, images and videos that appear to be legitimate statements and faces of people but are simulated beyond our ability to discern the fakes. As a result, these “deep fakes” can have misleading and pernicious effects on people through manipulative techniques.

The Potential for Technological Disruptions in Our Lives

The biggest fear with the rapid use and evolution of technology is that we may become too dependent upon tech and that technology will disrupt our traditional life model. For example, the increased use and advantages of robots in producing goods will impact employment opportunities. The work of one robot can replace an entire factory floor of people, so what are we as a society to do in that case? What types of solutions will governments and industries have to address this significant disruption?

Another concern is the omnipotence of listening devices and the self-affirming biases created by AI and AR. How do we address the loss of privacy and learn to differentiate between what is real and what are “deep fakes” created by augmented reality? There are undoubtedly many questions regarding the future of technology in our lives. Still, for now, the evolution has created opportunities and advantages for individuals willing to embrace those tech improvements.
