Why Dressing Nicely is Important

You know that feeling you have when you look good? I’m talking about the feeling that makes you walk taller and with more confidence? It’s because you’re putting the best version of you on display for the rest of the world. A version that you’re proud of. This is why it’s important to put a little effort into how you look by dressing nicely.  I work from home, so I find every time I leave the house an opportunity to dress up. The other day I wore this beautiful blue boucle jacket you see in this post with coordinating accessories and felt like a million dollars.  I was complimented not once, not twice, but 3 times on my outfit. One of my favorite comments was, “You look lovely. I wish more people dressed up every day.”

What dawned on me is that not only did I feel good, but that other people had noticed the extra effort and went out of their way to tell me how much they liked my look.  It was a great feeling to know I had made someone else smile. What happened to those days when people would get dressed up to go out in public? As much as I love my cozy sweatpants. It’s rare you’ll catch me out of the house in them. I just want to look put together in case I run into someone I know – or a cute guy in the grocery store aisle 😉

Now, I realize that the way I dress is not for all women or men. High heels aren’t always practical, nor are they comfortable. Parents with little ones may barely have time for themselves. If there’s something small that makes you feel good, red lipstick, tinted lip balm, your favorite sweatpants, a pretty handbag, edgy sunglasses, your college T-shirt, then DO IT. Whatever makes YOU feel good. See how you feel throughout the day. I’m willing to bet there will be a little extra pep in your step and smiles from those you meet.

xoxo,
Laura

  1. I think it’s great that you love to dress up and are wearing what makes you feel good but I think it’s important to see both sides of the story. What happened to women dressing up?? I’ll tell you. Women are now two roles- mom and moneymaker. We get up early get the kids dressed, make lunches and get the kids off to school all before we even start our own day. Then for the majority of us now it’s off to work, running meeting to meeting and I’ll tell you from personal experience literally everyday having to run meeting to meeting that that doesn’t happen in heels and a dress! Then we are working thru our lunch and on to more meetings. 5pm rolls around and most people are done for the day but not the average women she is taking her kids to soccer practice where she sits on cold bleachers waiting for it to be over. Then hurry home to get dinner ready, help the kids with their homework and get everyone ready for bed. Dressing up is obviously very important to you and that’s fabulous but I think what I love most about fashion is that it truely allows someone to show who they are. The women is a “go lions” T-shirt who just came from her sons basketball game, the women who is wearing jeans with holes in them after spending the day remodeling a house , the women in yoga pants who works out everyday to keep the 30lbs she’s lost off. I understand that being in “sweatpants in public is not how you personally want to be perceived” and like I said that’s great but every women out there is doing her own battle so I don’t think we should be judging them by what they are wearing but rather celebrating them for the reason they are wearing those sweatpants!

    1. Hi Laura,
You’re totally right, and yes, it is very important to see both sides. Fashion truly is different for everyone. I don’t have kids of my own… yet, but I understand (from experiencing what my friends with kids go through) is that with little ones around, it’s difficult to find time for yourself. So yes, I agree with you. Allow me to rephrase to say “a brush through one’s hair, a tinted chapstick, matching socks and you’re off to a great start to the day.” Thank you for taking the time to comment. I’ll be making a few changes to the article above 😉
      And GO TIGERS!
      xoxo,
      Laura
