My Thoughts on Lip Fillers

These days our culture seems to be inundated with all kinds of nonsurgical cosmetic procedures. Thanks to the Kardashians and other celebrities, these kinds of procedures have become, somewhat, dare I say- normal?

Yet, I and so many other women hesitate to share with the world that we’ve ever had anything cosmetically done to enhance our physical appearance. That is especially true for something like lip fillers or neurotoxins that paralyze muscles to prevent fine lines and wrinkles. (I wrote about my experience with BOTOX® in this post here.

I find this hesitation amusing since other physical enhancements, such as dyeing our hair to look younger or getting braces to straighten our naturally crooked teeth, are all considered normal practices these days. Injections are not there yet, but I am sure one day they will be.

So, I figured I would start to open the conversation and share my experience with lip fillers.  Perhaps I can erase some of that stigma that goes along with changing one’s appearance and encourage those of you who have been wanting to try fillers to finally take the leap and at least schedule a consultation!

My First Experience With Lip Fillers

Believe it or not, my first experience with lip fillers started a few years ago. People are often surprised by this since my lips look quite natural. The trick? Less is more.  My journey started because the disproportion between my upper and lower lip was obvious to me, the ability to fix this with lip injections pushed me to schedule my first appointment. I wish I could find a photo for you, but I spent hours editing my photos for my upper lip to look proportionate in almost every post on this blog.  My thought is if it is going to take you copious amounts of time and energy to change something every day, why not just spend the money to change it on a more permanent basis? Ahem… thank you, fillers.

Restylane® Kysse

Restylane is a well-known brand that makes cosmetic products such as fillers. Their latest product release is a filler by the name of Kysse. Now, each filler product has certain qualities about it. Some products are more firm, some are plusher, and some add more volume and are better for different parts of your face. Restylane Kysse is specifically made for lips, hence the name. It is the first lip filler designed with XpresHAn Technology which allows for flexible movement and natural-looking volume. The length of time any filler lasts depends on the person. However, Kysse has been proven to last for up to one year.

Dr. Stoker’s Office

I made my appointment for lip fillers in the Los Angeles area with Dr. Stoker’s office, where I have had multiple treatments done over the years, including BOTOX, fillers, and facials. I have worked with my injector, Stacy, numerous times and completely trust her judgment on where to put filler, how much, and when to stop. With less than one syringe of Restylane Kysse, she transformed my lips. I have a beautiful, more pronounced cupid’s bow, now and the results look as natural as possible. She did use a very small portion of the filler in my marionette lines (aka smile lines) which can deepen as we age.  I am so happy with the results and love that my lips still look natural and full.

Of course, with any kind of injection, it is important to know pre and post-care instructions. I like to know all of the do’s and don’ts days before my appointment to make sure I am following all of the guidelines to avoid bruising or participating in an activity that could cause harm before or after my appointment. For example, it is usually not recommended to work out or play sports after a treatment. The good news about having to wear a mask is that I can hide any swelling/bruising. Although normally I do not bruise, I have a few times and it is completely normal. Don’t be afraid to ask all kinds of questions before, after, and during your appointment. Dr. Stoker’s staff is always happy to answer them.

COVID-19 Precautions

I was so happy when Dr. Stoker’s office opened back up. They are of course taking every precaution necessary during these times, and I felt completely at ease in their office for my appointment.
