DIY Feather Skirt

Today is the day wear I show you how to make your own DIY Feather Skirt! When I love an item or a new trend, but I don’t like the price tags I DIY! Here is how you can make your own feather skirt:

DIY FEATHER SKIRT

Materials you will need for your feather skirt:
1. Skirt (depending on the color of your feathers. I chose black. This skirt was $10 on sale at H&M.)
2. Ostrich feather trim (I bought 10 yards for $54 on Ebay and used the extra to make a handbag. 4+ yards for a size small skirt
5+ yards for medium skirt
6+ yards for large skirt
3. Glue- Aleene’s Tacky glue works wonders and dries clear!
4. Scissors

Step 1: glue a thin straight line for the first layer of feather trim starting at bottom of the skirt. Lay feather trims on the skirt and trim at end of the skirt. Allow feathers to hang below the trim. Do not apply so much glue that it gets everywhere.

Step 2: Add a second layer of glue 2-3 inches above the first trim. Cut trim once you reach the edge of the skirt. Repeat adding feather layers as desired until you reach the top of the skirt. Let dry for at least 30 minutes. Flip skirt over and begin the same process on the back of the skirt.

Notes: The reason to only glue one side at a time is so the skirt has time to dry and it is able to stretch on the sides.

  2. Hi!
If I were to make a maxi skirt, what model would you recommend, in which fabric and how many yard should be necessary?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Adina,

It is best to use a fabric that doesn’t stretch. The string of feathers cannot stretch so make sure to glue it to a non-stretch fabric. The number of yards depends on how thick you want the rows of feathers to be. For that skirt, I laid the rows of feathers 2-3 inches apart from each other. I would estimate at least 10-12 yards for a maxi skirt. If you are taller go for 12 yards and vice versa. Good luck and feel free to message me with any other questions. Send me a photo when it is done, I would love to see!!
      xoxo,
      Laura
