Real Talk: 3 Requirements to Becoming a Successful Blogger

“You have to be so determined in this industry to push through the noise and the pressure to get where you want to be.”

As the blogging world continues to grow, there are a few things that separate the hobby bloggers from the successful ones. When I use the term “successful blogger” I am referring to someone who is able to make a living from their blog. There is nothing wrong with having a blog as a hobby. I did it for four years and I loved it. Less pressure for sure!

However, after being a full-time blogger for almost a year, I can tell you that there are three requirements to becoming a successful blogger. These are…

1. Dedication

Many people still think that becoming a successful blogger happens overnight. I can tell you from first-hand experience that this is not true. It’s months to years of endless hours of blogging, photographing, networking, emailing back and forth to build a blog and a following. It’s also a lot of late nights, early mornings, and weekends working. There is also a lot of uncertainty with this job, for example, where will my next paycheck be coming from? After a while, you kind of get used to it. But it can be very scary sometimes. My #1 tips: have savings, a game plan and work your butt off!

2. Discipline:

When you work from home and/or work for yourself, it can be difficult to force yourself to tackle your tasks for the day. Especially without someone like a boss breathing over your shoulder or reminding you of a deadline fast approaching.  Some days I admit, I am just not in the mood and sitting at my desk answering emails is the last thing I want to do. But there is also a sense of guilt that begins to plague me if I go too long without being productive. Because I know that right now the growth of my business is solely up to me. If I don’t work, I won’t meet my goals and I risk having to go back to a corporate job working for someone else.

So I carve out my week and know that if I spend a weekday out with friends, that’s a day of my weekend I’ll have to spend at my desk making sure I’m on top of everything.

2. Determination:

You have to be so determined in this industry to push through the noise and get where you want to be. Even after 5 years in this industry, I am still setting bigger goals for myself and my business. But I won’t get there if I throw in the towel now! You have to keep pushing yourself to reach the next level, whatever that may be for you.  Continue to dedicate time, resources and to think outside the box for collaborations. Be hungry and work hard, that’s how you’ll get there.

For any of you that are bloggers, what are some traits you find necessary to be a successful blogger? For anyone wanting to start a blog, what’s stopping you? Let me know in the comments below and I’ll make sure to answer your questions in my next Real Talk post!
